Texas State Summer Play and Inquiry Workshop
For three weeks every June, around 200 students ranging in age from 3 to 8 gather each morning at Bonham Pre-K in San Marcos for a multilingual, multiage, and multicultural program based on exploration and play, an event we call Texas State Summer Play and Inquiry Workshop. This workshop is based on the latest research, which has led faculty from Texas State University to develop a curriculum based on the idea that when children create, build, tell stories, explore, and play, they are building a foundation for algebra, physics, sociology, literacy, and all other disciplines. A cohort of Texas State Early Childhood Education (ECE) interns and faculty work in collaboration with classroom teachers and administrators from San Marcos CISD to make this workshop a safe, fun and freedom-filled reality.
Central Texas Writing Project Youth Writers' Camps
CTWP teachers share the belief that students learn to write when they are inspired in a supportive, non-threatening environment. Our goal for our youth programs is to give all young writers, regardless of skill level, the opportunity to compose in a variety of styles, to become more self-confident in their own writing ability, and learn to appreciate the abilities of others.
Texas State University College of Education created The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award in 1995 to honor authors and illustrators who create literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. It is named in honor of Texas State University distinguished alumnus Dr. Tomás Rivera.
CTWP Invitational Summer Institute for Educators
The Invitational Summer Institute (ISI) is the core of the CTWP's professional development programming, and it is an activity that is conducted by all 175+ sites of the National Writing Project across the nation. Teachers who apply for and attend the CTWP Invitational Summer Institute engage with other teachers and site directors to share and explore effective teaching strategies.
Central Texas Writing Young Youth Camps
The Central Texas Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, is a non-profit K-16 professional development provider within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education. Educators and education leaders are invited to attend a wide variety of CTWP professional development programs including a Summer Institute, Open Institutes, Advanced Institutes, and other professional growth settings that bring colleagues together to explore the most successful research-based approaches for teaching writing. Based on the NWP's teachers-teaching-teachers model, CTWP programs value the professionalism of teachers and the needs of all students.
