About meI am an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Currently I teach Elementary Science Methods to both undergraduate and graduate students. I also teach Adolescent Growth and Development and Project-Based Instruction. My research interests are the effects of Project-Based Instruction, teacher development, and the effects of lab simulations on problem solving among science students. I taught high school science at LBJ High School in Austin, Texas for ten years. During that time I taught Biology I, Chemistry I, AP Environmental Science, Physiology, Marine Science, Computer Science Applications, and Planet Earth. I received over $20,000 in grants and awards and served as department chair. I left teaching to finish my Ph.D. and work with the newly formed UTeach program at the University of Texas at Austin. There I worked with Tony Petrosino to develop the capstone course, Project-Based Instruction and also taught or assisted with all other courses in the UTeach sequence. With Janis Lariviere I developed the College of Natural Sciences Faculty mentoring program and annual teaching strategies conference for new natural sciences faculty.
