The COE AI Working Group: Future-Proofing Education

A semester-long initiative to integrate Artificial Intelligence across teaching, research, and professional preparation.

Our Process

To ensure our recommendations encompass how AI is and should be integrated, we conducted a comprehensive review across the following areas:

  • Benchmarking AI policies and practices from universities, school districts, and industry partners
  • Identifying AI tools relevant to faculty and students
  • Compiling ethics and training resources.

Key Recommendations

We have identified several strategic areas to ensure ethical and effective AI integration.

Clear Syllabus Guidance

Use AI statements in all syllabi, provide policy options for instructors, and ensure transparency and citation when students use AI with permission.

Dialogue-Based Integrity

Strengthen academic integrity processes through conversation-based inquiry rather than reliance on detection tools.

Ethical AI Literacy

Expand faculty training on ethical and pedagogical uses of AI and integrate AI literacy and workforce-aligned competencies in program curricula.

Workforce Alignment

Align coursework with AI tools commonly used in K-12 and industry settings (if and when appropriate).

Institutional Access

Reduce barriers and support equitable access to institutional AI resources.

Continuous Evaluation

Create a standing AI committee to maintain ongoing review, update guidelines, and coordinate professional development.

Recommendations from the College of Education Artificial Intelligence Working Group

Following the semester-long evaluation, the COE AI Working Group provided several recommendations, compiled a thorough list of resources, and generated drafts and samples for COE faculty use, including syllabus statements and dialogue-based inquiry options.
