About the Program
The Texas State Teacher Residency involves a full year of hands-on clinical preparation in an elementary, middle, or high school classroom, alongside a carefully selected and trained Host Teacher. In addition, residents receive ongoing coaching and support from a Texas State Field Supervisor and Regional Site Coordinator.
The goal of the Texas State Teacher Residency is to prepare the highest-quality teachers who are Day 1-ready to provide rigorous, high-quality learning experiences for all students.

Eligibility
Students on the following certification pathways are eligible to participate:
- EC6
- Bilingual
- Special Education
- Secondary
- English
- Math
- US History
- Science
Program Details
Elementary, Bilingual, Secondary (certain areas) and Special Education candidates pursuing certification in Education will complete the year-long residency as part of their plans of study.
Prior to and during the Residency I (Semester One), residents will:
- Attend all staff development and the entire first week of school
- Work in an assigned classroom alongside a designated host teacher four full days/week, with one day devoted to campus responsibilities defined in the district-Texas State partnership
- Engage in professional development workshops, planning activities, and faculty meetings alongside a mentor teacher
- Participate in planning with a mentor teacher and grade-level team
- Take literacy, classroom management, and math methods courses
- Take an EDST course that includes seminars taught by the Field Supervisor
- Successfully complete all required certification exams, if not already completed prior to start of Residency I
During Residency II (Semester Two), residents will:
- Work in the assigned classroom alongside a designated host teacher four days/week, with one day devoted to campus responsibilities defined in the district-Texas State partnership
- Engage in all professional development workshops, planning activities, and faculty meetings alongside a mentor teacher
- Participate in planning with a mentor teacher and grade-level team
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and other school-community activities
- Take an EDST course that includes seminars taught by the Field Supervisor
- Successfully complete all required certification exams, if not already completed prior to completion of Residency II
If you haven't already met with an academic advisor to create a detailed long-range plan projecting your field-based block and clinical teaching semesters, do that right away. Ultimately what you have left to take and when you have planned to take it will determine whether a residency experience is possible.
