The Department of Health & Human Performance partnered with Adaptive Adventures & the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to teach students about adaptive sports and outdoor recreation.
Students and faculty in the Recreational Therapy Program were able to step outdoors for a hands-on learning experience at the Adaptive Multisport Expo in October. Adaptive Adventures, headquartered in Colorado, brought adaptive bikes, kayaks, and other outdoor gear. Texas Parks & Wildlife also brought out trail access gear. During the expo, students were able to learn about and try the gear to better understand outdoor recreation support for those with mobility issues.
Adaptive Adventures is a nonprofit based in Colorado that travels across the country with its high-quality equipment to share knowledge and provide outdoor adventures for people with physical disabilities.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department is also highly invested in adaptive outdoor recreation. In 2023, they published a 24-year plan that details accessibility status for public facilities, upgrade priorities, and a projected timeline. The department is actively dedicated to their goal to make the outdoors enjoyable for everyone.
